Food waste

Food waste is food that was intended for human consumption but is lost or discarded somewhere between production and the consumer.

Definition

Waste represents lost raw materials, water and emissions, which is why prevention is generally more effective than processing afterwards.

Applied in practice

New Economy maps food waste within food system analyses and values avoided waste in SCBAs of food hubs and initiatives, as part of the broader R-ladder logic.
