Urban mining

Urban mining is the recovery of raw materials from existing buildings, infrastructure and discarded products, treating the city itself as a material stock.

Definition

Reusing metals, timber and construction materials from this stock reduces demand for new extraction and keeps value in the chain.

Applied in practice

New Economy maps urban mining potential by linking waste data to material value and environmental cost, for example for timber from demolition projects and e-waste in urban regions, translating this into concrete business cases for collection, refurbishment and processing.
