BECCS
BECCS combines bio-energy with carbon capture and storage. Biomass absorbs CO₂ while growing; when it is used for energy production, the CO₂ released is captured and stored long-term.
Because the biomass has captured CO₂ during growth and that CO₂ is then captured rather than emitted, BECCS can achieve net removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere.
Applied in practice
In the Carbon Sequestration Market Study, New Economy classifies BECCS as a partly technological (grey-green) method. Despite years of development, few operational projects exist worldwide and many initiatives require substantial government support. BECCS offers no direct benefits for biodiversity and water quality and may have negative effects through land and nitrogen use. The technical potential in the Netherlands is estimated at 12 to 19 Mton CO₂ per year, at costs around €172 per ton CO₂; actual implementation remains uncertain.

The Carbon Sequestration House
The Carbon Sequestration House maps which sequestration methods are linked to the societal objectives of the Dutch National Environmental Vision (NOVI). Each method is assessed against policy goals for the circular economy, living environment, energy, water, soil, climate, agriculture and nature.
The analysis shows that natural sequestration in particular is linked to several objectives at once: lower nitrogen emissions, cleaner water, healthy food, biobased building materials and new economic opportunities. Technological sequestration more often targets a single goal, such as CO₂ reduction alone, and can temporarily raise nitrogen emissions. An integrated trade-off between green and grey methods is therefore preferable.
