To curb emissions from road traffic, the speed limit on Dutch motorways has been lowered nationally from 130 to 100 km/h. The measure bears on the energy-related emissions of road traffic, the principal emission source within the mobility and transport sector in Gelderland.
The speed reduction falls outside the non-energy scope of the Drawdown analysis, but it illustrates where the climate gain in this sector actually sits: in limiting fuel consumption and combustion emissions. Together with the policy already in place on air conditioning in lorries, the measure shows that mobility greens mainly through existing energy and traffic policy, and not through separate non-energy reduction or sequestration solutions.
