Drawdown: global climate solutions, translated regionally

As a partner of Drawdown Europe, New Economy translates the world’s most promising climate solutions into concrete regional strategies for Dutch governments. Many regions have a Regional Energy Strategy (RES) and a target to reduce CO₂-eq by 45–55%; New Economy maps the potential of both greenhouse gas reduction and sequestration, so governments can steer towards the largest climate opportunities.

About this project. Partner: Drawdown Europe. Sector: government, region and climate. Year: 2021. Focus: translating global climate solutions into regionally steerable greenhouse gas reduction and sequestration.

What is Drawdown?

With more than 100 researchers and over 10,000 hours of research, Drawdown has scientifically substantiated how the climate problem can be reversed at a global scale. Across 100+ solutions, it shows that 2050 could be the point at which greenhouse gases are net absorbed by natural systems — the moment of “drawdown”.

Regional climate opportunities mapped

New Economy translates these insights into Dutch practice. For regional governments, the potential of both greenhouse gas reduction and sequestration is mapped, so they can steer towards the largest climate opportunities. This connects global solutions to concrete regional strategies, and sector-level targets to the regional reduction goal of 45–55% CO₂-eq.

New Economy’s role

New Economy is active as a partner mapping the potential of greenhouse gas reduction and sequestration for regional governments, and supports Drawdown Europe in developing and rolling out the Dutch strategy. This connects to the work around the GHG Protocol and the national carbon sequestration market exploration.

Frequently asked questions

What does Drawdown mean?

Drawdown is the point in time when the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere stops rising and starts falling. The initiative of the same name bundles the most promising climate solutions to reach that point.

What does New Economy do with Drawdown?

New Economy is a partner of Drawdown Europe and translates the solutions into regional strategies for Dutch governments, addressing both reduction and sequestration of greenhouse gases.

How does Drawdown help with regional energy strategy and climate targets?

By translating sector-level targets into the regional goal of 45 to 55% CO₂-eq reduction, so governments can steer towards the solutions with the greatest impact.
