The five tasks share one green-blue package of measures: around €2.5 million in societal value against €1.3 million in costs per model neighbourhood, at an investment of €140,000 to €285,000 per hectare. That makes climate adaptation linking work par excellence — the tasks are not additive, because the same trees and planted areas serve them all at once.

Disconnecting rainwater in public space and capturing it in greenery buffers water locally: less flooding during peak downpours and less drought damage in hot summers. Neighbourhood biodiversity as a resilient ecosystem
Urban biodiversity is essential for a healthy ecosystem. Flowers, shrubs and varied greenery give insects and animals food and shelter, and improve air and water quality. Greater species richness makes the greenery less vulnerable to disease, pests and the effects of extreme weather. Insect and worm hotels further strengthen the bond between resident and nature.
Rainwater from the roof into the soil
Downpipes that discharge straight into the sewer send clean rainwater away while gardens dry out. Water butts, infiltration crates and green roofs hold water where it falls: lower sewer charges and more groundwater in dry periods. That way the home itself becomes part of the water task.
Green against heat islands
Heatwaves are becoming more frequent and urban neighbourhoods heat up disproportionately: stone and asphalt store warmth. More trees and planted areas counter the heat-island effect, capture particulate matter and raise liveability. The cooling arises from the same greenery that stores rainwater and carries biodiversity.
Green roofs and façades
During heatwaves, poorly adapted homes reach unliveable temperatures, with health damage as a result. Green roofs, green façades and cool materials keep buildings passively cool — without energy-hungry air conditioning — while buffering water and promoting biodiversity at the same time.

The five climate tasks are components of the same green-blue package for a model neighbourhood of around 2,500 households. Because the same green and blue interventions serve all tasks at once, the amounts are not additive: the package counts as a whole.
