Mobility in Gelderland: 26% of greenhouse gas emissions, roughly 4.7 Mton CO₂-eq per year

Within the Gelderland climate opportunities map, the mobility sector accounts for about 26% of total greenhouse gas emissions, which amounts to some 4.7 Mton CO₂-eq per year. That makes transport one of the largest emission sources in the province.

The overwhelming share of these emissions arises from combustion in road traffic, which ties the sector closely to the wider energy transition: cleaner electricity and electrification determine how fast the figure falls. Unlike agriculture or land use, mobility holds no carbon sequestration, so every tonne of reduction must come entirely from avoiding emissions. The 26% share thus orders the urgency: without targeted intervention in passenger and freight transport, a quarter of the provincial task remains untouched.
