Nuclear energy is an irreversible choice with a very long lead time. It can only contribute to climate targets when planning, permitting, financing, construction and system integration are aligned over many years. That makes it different from measures that can be scaled more incrementally, such as solar, wind, demand response, storage and heat solutions.
In the Gelderland energy context, the key question is therefore not only technical feasibility, but timing and opportunity cost. A nuclear route requires long-term commitment, risk allocation and public decision-making. It should be compared with alternatives that can deliver earlier emissions reductions while keeping the energy system flexible.
