Meadows with trees sequester five to ten times more carbon

Meadows with trees can sequester five to ten times more carbon than treeless grassland. Carbon is stored in above-ground biomass and in soil, while trees can also support shade, biodiversity, landscape quality and better water management.

For Gelderland agriculture, this points to silvopasture and agroforestry as practical sequestration routes. The measure is relevant not only for CO₂, but also for the resilience of farming systems. Its value depends on design, tree species, management, protection of stored carbon and the extent to which farmers can combine it with existing farm practice.
