Heat pumps provide both heating and cooling. That makes them relevant for buildings where comfort during warmer periods is becoming increasingly important. The measure can combine several functions: replacing fossil heat, using energy more efficiently and improving the indoor climate. In utility buildings in particular, this combination can strengthen the business case.
The climate value depends on good application. A heat pump works best in a building with low heat demand, suitable heat distribution and smart controls. If cooling increases without efficient design, electricity demand can rise. Heating and cooling therefore need to be designed together as part of insulation, building management and grid capacity.
