Demand for mobility in Gelderland keeps growing: the number of kilometres travelled by passenger and freight traffic rose by 10% over ten years, while emissions across the road network climbed 15% over the past twenty years. The province combines a strong logistics sector with above-average travel distances, which raises the pressure further.
This upward trend explains why replacing vehicles is not enough on its own: if total kilometres keep growing, the additional demand eats away part of the gain from electrification. The analysis points here to the law of constant travel time and trips, and to the Jevons paradox, in which cheaper or faster mobility can actually increase traffic.
