Better cycling infrastructure replaces car trips in commuting and lowers emissions as a result. Comfortable, safe and fast cycling routes shift the daily choice from the car to the bicycle. The bike then becomes the obvious alternative for many everyday trips.
Every car trip that disappears thanks to a good cycling connection saves fuel, space and emissions, above all on the short commuting distances where the bicycle is competitive. Investments in cycle highways and safe crossings make that effect structural rather than incidental. For municipalities in Gelderland and the province, cycling infrastructure is therefore a relatively cheap measure with direct climate and health gains.
