The Gelderland Climate Plan carries a large housing task, of which retrofitting some 500,000 existing homes forms a core component. Alongside that, 20% of new construction is to be delivered through circular concept building.
Most retrofit measures for existing homes concern energy-related greenhouse gases and fall outside the non-energy scope of this sector analysis. Timber construction applies mainly to new build, where wood can store carbon; in the existing stock the gains lie predominantly in insulation and heating. The scale of 500,000 homes shows how large the wider task in the built environment is, next to the specific role of timber.
