Replacing a combustion car with an emission-free vehicle yields a reduction of roughly 64%, equal to 0.124 kg CO₂-eq per vehicle kilometre (well-to-wheel). That share rises above 80% as the energy transition advances and cars are charged with cleaner electricity by 2030.
The well-to-wheel approach counts not only the emissions released while driving, but also those from generating the charging electricity. The climate advantage of electric driving is therefore tied to the greening of the electricity system: as long as the power mix still contains fossil components, the reduction per kilometre stays below the theoretical maximum. This connection explains why the analysis treats the mobility and energy transitions as one movement: every step towards renewable generation raises the return on the electric kilometres driven.
