Electric vehicles can be more than a replacement for fossil-fuel cars. When charging is steered intelligently, vehicles can help absorb peaks and troughs in renewable generation. That creates a link between mobility, the electricity grid, storage and flexibility. The charging point then becomes part of the energy system.
For Gelderland, this means charging infrastructure should not be designed as a mobility facility alone. Smart charging, bidirectional charging, grid capacity and local generation determine whether electric vehicles also deliver system value. The task is therefore twofold: reduce emissions and make the energy system more robust at the same time. That calls for different requirements for charging points, planning and cooperation between mobility and energy parties.
