The road network, the charging infrastructure and public space need to be prepared for the breakthrough of self-driving cars.
Unlike most mobility measures, this is about anticipating a development that still has to take hold. For Gelderland, it means that choices in road design, charging facilities and the layout of public space already take account of technology that will only be used at scale later. That foresight reduces the risk of having to adapt infrastructure again. For municipalities and the province, the task is above all one of planning and standard-setting, rather than of direct emission reduction. This subject therefore calls for a long horizon in regional climate and mobility policy. Source: Climate Opportunities Map Gelderland (Mobility), March 2024.
