Of the 80,000 homes to be built in Gelderland up to 2030, 20% must be delivered circularly, which amounts to 16,000 homes. Timber can play an important role in that circular task, both through emissions reduction compared with conventional building materials and through carbon dioxide storage in buildings.
The link between the circular building ambition and timber construction turns the housing task into a concrete climate lever for the province. Each timber home stores about 45 tonnes of carbon dioxide on average, so the size of the new-build programme directly determines the storage capacity.
