Within the mobility sector in Gelderland, by far the largest part of greenhouse gas emissions comes from the exhaust gases of road traffic. Passenger cars, vans and lorries together account for roughly 90% of mobility emissions; mobile machinery is the second largest contributor at slightly over 5%.
That concentration in road traffic determines where reduction yields most: virtually the whole task runs through electrifying and reducing trips on the road, not through niche sources. Because mobility as a whole represents about 26% of emissions in Gelderland, road traffic within it weighs heavily on the total provincial greenhouse gas balance. This explains why emission-free vehicles, zero-emission zones, smarter transport and cycling are presented in the analysis as mutually reinforcing levers rather than as separate measures.
