Cycling as a solution delivers a reduction potential in Gelderland of 31 kton (projection) to 55 kton CO₂-eq per year (ambitious) in 2030, the smallest of the four mobility clusters. The total number of electric bicycles grows to around 720,000 by 2030.
The gain arises because every e-bike sold replaces commuting by car, and better cycling infrastructure lowers the number of car kilometres driven per person. Per e-bike sold, commuting falls by 195 to 312 km per year, and improved infrastructure saves 38 to 77 km per person. Although the absolute potential is modest, cycling counts as a healthy and space-efficient addition that mainly replaces short car trips, precisely where electrification yields least.
