Telecommunication can reduce commuting

Commuting can be reduced through telecommunication: the measures around COVID-19 have already increased public willingness for it. Alongside emissions, this shift also saves travel time.

Because telecommunication does not require new infrastructure but behaviour and agreements, it is a mobility solution that employers and municipalities in Gelderland can put in place themselves in the short term. The experience built up during the pandemic forms a starting point: working from home and digital meetings have become familiar habits for many organisations and can structurally lower the number of trips. For regional climate policy, this is mainly interesting as a complement to technical measures, because the gain sits in avoided journeys rather than in cleaner transport.
