Each year, Gelderland households waste 82,000 tonnes of food, equal to 131 kilograms of CO₂-eq per person per year. The further food travels down the chain before it is discarded, the more resources and emissions are lost. Tackling food waste gives the sector a reduction potential of 0.020 to 0.137 Mton CO₂-eq in 2030.
Worldwide, 30 to 40 percent of all food produced is lost in the supply chain, which means action at every link has effect: at farms, during transport, in supermarkets and retail, in hospitality and in people’s homes. Better storage and transport systems, awareness and behavioural change reduce that waste. Less waste also lowers demand for agricultural land, which frees up space for nature or other functions.
