Only Zuid-Holland (1,380) and Noord-Holland (1,084) are more densely populated than Utrecht at 916 inhabitants per km². The province counts 1,361,093 inhabitants on 1,485 km² (1 January 2021).
High population density means many homes. Especially the stock built in the 1930s, the post-war period and the 1980s is often poorly insulated with high energy demand — and that is exactly where the renovation potential lies.
