Exhaust emissions from road traffic account for 2.86 Mton CO₂-eq per year, by far the largest single emission source in the province of Utrecht. A large share comes from passenger transport on the motorways.
Solutions lie in strengthening public transport, reducing transport movements and alternative modes such as the electric bicycle. Utrecht’s central position as the country’s traffic hub makes this challenge weigh heavier than in other provinces.
