Controlling refrigerant leakage from existing appliances, together with recovery, recycling and destruction at end of life, has a reduction potential of 0.098 Mton CO₂-eq in Gelderland in 2030. Project Drawdown distinguishes five routes here, ranging from reduced appliance use to refrigerants with a lower warming potential.
This solution is named fourth, but falls outside the modelled sector potential because its role is smaller than that of landfill sites. Emissions from cooling come mainly from stationary refrigeration, freezing and air conditioning (0.13 Mton per year) and from mobile air conditioning in road transport (0.04 Mton per year). For the Netherlands, and by assumption also for Gelderland, existing policy is already expected to deliver a decline of 79% through 2030; the potential of targeted management comes on top of that.
