Food waste causes 7 megatonnes CO₂-eq

Food waste means that not only food is lost, but also the land, water, energy and emissions used for production and distribution. The background figure linked to the exploratory SCBA refers to 2.8 million tonnes of wasted food and an estimated 7 megatonnes of CO₂-eq.

The SCBA of food initiatives in Amsterdam-Noord treats rescued food flows and CO₂ reduction as components of social value. The background figure describes the wider impact of food waste and should not be read as the quantity rescued by the 32 initiatives examined in the study.
