Conservation agriculture rests on minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and diversified crop rotations; regenerative agriculture adds compost and organic production, among other practices. Of the nine agricultural solutions examined, this combination carries the largest reduction potential: 0.004 to 1.346 Mton CO₂-eq in 2030. A smaller livestock herd is included in the calculation of the upper bound.
That link with a halving of the livestock herd is decisive: it is the combination that lifts the potential to the upper bound of 1.346 Mton. After Flevoland and Friesland, Gelderland holds the largest area of organic farmland in the Netherlands, and the shift can be applied to roughly 225,000 hectares. Initiatives such as Herenboeren and Commonland are already working along these lines, which shows the transition in the province does not start from zero.
