Definition. Biobased insulation stores over 1 tonne of CO₂ per m³. Because trees and plants capture CO₂ as they grow, some biobased insulation materials store more than a tonne of CO₂ per cubic metre and can even have negative emissions; this temporary storage is not yet counted in the standard calculation.

Including carbon storage therefore gives a more realistic picture of insulation’s climate contribution. New Economy’s circular insulation study for Amsterdam reports this.
