Aquathermal energy has a reduction potential of 150 kton CO₂-eq by 2030 in the ambitious scenario. The source works with up to 100,000 homes connected to heat supply through aquathermal energy. Its value therefore mainly sits in the heat transition.
The measure requires place-based planning. Aquathermal energy depends on suitable water sources, heat networks, seasonal storage, permitting, heat demand and cooperation with municipalities, housing associations and grid operators. Climate gains only materialise when heat source, infrastructure and demand are organised together.
