Research by Yale University from 2014 calculates that a larger share of wood in construction can cut global carbon dioxide emissions by 14 to 31%. The range shows that the choice of building material is a substantial lever within the global climate question.
For Gelderland this places the sector analysis in a wider setting: timber construction is not only regionally relevant to the housing task, but connects to internationally substantiated potential. A strategic exploration by the Dutch ministries of BZK and LNV, among others, points to further advantages for urbanisation, the housing shortage, health and landscape. Barriers such as the MKI and MPG calculations, which treat wood storage as short-lived, still slow the scaling up.
