Compensation ignores the carbon debt of the past

Compensation can ignore the carbon debt of the past when it focuses only on current or future emissions. Restoring that past debt can take companies 5 to 30 years, depending on the scale of emissions and the removal or sequestration route used.

For credible climate strategy, compensation should therefore not replace reduction. It needs to be connected to a clear baseline, a time horizon and transparent accounting for historical emissions.
