Up to 36 Mton CO₂ per year

Natural carbon sequestration in the Netherlands can reach roughly 36 Mton CO₂ per year according to the market exploration.

This potential comes from ten scientifically grounded methods, including reforestation, regenerative agriculture, biochar, wetland restoration and storage in biobased materials. The figure shows that carbon sequestration can make a substantial contribution to the climate challenge, but only when emission reduction remains the first priority. Sequestration is not a substitute for reducing emissions. Its value is strongest when measures also improve soil health, nature restoration, water management, circular construction chains and new revenue models.
