Launch of Biobased Design

During Dutch Design Week 2023, New Economy and studio Brian Kersbergen launched the Biobased Design platform, with the Regenerative Modular Cabinet (RMC) as its first project: a regenerative vision of design and materials, made tangible in a modular piece of furniture.

Biobased Design grew from the conviction that the era of fast furniture is over. The platform is an invitation to designers to create their own version of a biobased, regenerative design, and uses furniture to make space for connection and education around regeneration. The RMC is the first project; in early 2024 the first two hundred unique, 100% biobased pieces go into production.

A design philosophy for a new movement

The RMC goes beyond traditional furniture design. It is a tangible example of design in connection with nature, one that stimulates creative thinking. The piece is designed to grow, adapt and be redesigned, enabling a new ecological approach.

Measuring is knowing

Biobased Design opts for a transparent approach to material choice. Unlike fast furniture, the RMC is built to last for several generations. New Economy researches the impact of the materials and connects the regenerative vision to concrete product development.

Materials for tomorrow

The introduction of the RMC marks the start of a learning project. It shows that positive environmental impact need not be complicated: it can be local, better for the soil and for biodiversity, with fair production and reasonable prices.
