The real price of CO₂ is around €700 per tonne

The New Economy opinion article Do not compensate, create used a 2020 estimate from Trouw of around €700 per tonne of CO₂. The same comparison showed a minimum compensation price of €6, making the historical estimate more than one hundred times higher. It was a time-specific estimate of societal costs, not a fixed current market or offset price.

The later Carbon Sequestration Market Exploration uses €875 per tonne as the societal CO₂ price for social cost-benefit calculations. ETS prices, voluntary offsets, internal carbon prices and societal costs serve different purposes and should not be compared without context.
