The emissions of the Utrecht built environment (0.918 Mton in the 2018 insulation baseline) consist mainly of gas use by central-heating boilers. Lowering heat demand therefore tackles the largest source directly.
All five calculated solutions — insulation, heat pumps, smart thermostats, heat recovery and the recirculating shower — target heating and hot water, the core of household energy use.
