The CO₂ stored per kilo of insulation is more than 14 times the emissions from production and installation. Derived from the baseline measurement by New Economy for Wesselink (2021): 1.3 against 0.09 kg CO₂ per kilo. The ratio shows how far storage outweighs the footprint of making the material. The production impact of insulation material is often overlooked, leaving the net climate gain unknown.
A baseline measurement makes production, installation and use phase measurable and shows whether insulation is net CO₂-negative. This is relevant for insulation companies, construction firms and clients in the built environment. Source: Nulmeting Wesselink (2021).
