Peat meadow restoration avoids 16.5 tonnes of CO₂-eq per hectare per year

Restoring subsidence-prone peat meadows avoids 16.5 tonnes of CO₂-eq of emissions per hectare per year. Protecting subsidence-resistant peat additionally sequesters 0.51 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year.

The adoption rates in the scenarios build on the Drawdown models and the province of Utrecht’s soil subsidence implementation programme (2020-2023). Damaged peat emits large amounts of CO₂ and makes the soil sink; restoration tackles both problems at once.
