Peat consists of 50% carbon and is, after the ocean, the second-largest store of natural carbon. Worldwide, peatlands hold about twice as much carbon as all forests combined.
For a peat province like Utrecht this is a key insight: the largest climate capital lies literally in the soil, and protecting it delivers more than many a technical solution.
