Nuclear energy: 614 kton CO₂-eq in the ambitious scenario

Nuclear energy contributes in the Gelderland Climate Opportunities Map only in the ambitious scenario: one SMR with 520 MW thermal and 200 MW electrical capacity, linked to 614 kton CO₂-eq reduction potential by 2030. It is therefore positioned as a possible electricity source alongside solar, wind, geothermal and aquathermal energy.

The strategic issue is mainly lead time and system fit. Nuclear energy requires decision-making, permitting, safety, finance, spatial integration and connection to the wider energy system. The source therefore frames it not as a quick implementation measure, but as a high-uncertainty choice with long preparation time and strong lock-in effects.
