The societal value of natural carbon sequestration in the Netherlands runs up to some €429 billion towards 2050 according to the market exploration; on an annual basis it amounts to roughly €31 billion, an estimate that weighs broad prosperity alongside strictly economic returns.
That cumulative amount encompasses a healthy living environment, water quality, biodiversity and wellbeing. For Noord-Holland it underlines that a sequestration strategy alongside the reduction strategy is economically sound: carbon sequestration appears not as a cost item but as an investment that pays for itself through land restoration and new business models, and one that can address several spatial tasks at once within the complex provincial spatial puzzle.
