Low-threshold access prevents shame

Low-threshold access prevents shame because people can receive support without a heavy administrative or social barrier. Food insecurity is often hidden, and formal help can feel stigmatising. A food initiative can lower that threshold by offering a familiar place, a normal routine and respectful contact.

For food hubs and neighbourhood initiatives, this is a core design principle. Access should be clear, reliable and dignified. When residents can come in without feeling reduced to a problem, the initiative becomes more than distribution: it becomes a route toward trust, participation and earlier support.
