Climate gains sit in materials and energy because buildings create impact in two different phases. Operational energy determines heating, cooling and electricity use during the building’s lifetime. Material choices determine embodied emissions, storage of biogenic carbon and the circular value of components.
For the built-environment and biobased-construction work, this means that renovation cannot be assessed only through energy labels. Insulation, timber, biobased materials, reuse and design for disassembly all influence the final climate result. A credible strategy therefore combines energy reduction with lower-impact materials.
