The province of Utrecht counts about 2,500 farms (2020), of which an estimated 2,000 derive all or most of their income from the farm itself. Dairy farming is by far the largest sector, followed by other grazing livestock farms.
Intensive livestock farming sits mainly in the east of the province, fruit growing in the Kromme Rijn area and greenhouse horticulture in the Harmelerwaard and the Derde Bedijking polder near Mijdrecht. Arable farming is relatively scarce.
