€31 billion in value per year

Natural carbon sequestration represents an estimated societal value of roughly €31 billion per year in the Netherlands. In the Carbon sequestration market exploration, New Economy uses this value to show that sequestration is not only a climate measure, but can also create economic, ecological and societal value.

The exploration estimates that this value can rise to roughly €429 billion towards 2050 when carbon sequestration is linked to agriculture, nature, water, biodiversity and biobased construction. This insight is relevant for provinces, municipalities, companies and area-based coalitions that want to connect climate policy with broader prosperity. The point is not to make emissions easy to offset, but to show that targeted investment in soil, biomass and long-lived materials can create multiple forms of value.
