The IPCC distinguishes ten scientifically substantiated methods for carbon removal, known as Carbon Dioxide Removal. The market exploration for the province of Utrecht takes these ten methods as its point of departure and translates them into the Dutch and provincial context.
The methods range from natural routes such as planting, reforestation and storage in the soil to technological variants such as direct air capture and enhanced weathering of minerals. By ordering the full spectrum, the exploration makes visible which methods are already applicable for entrepreneurs, financiers, government bodies and landowners in Utrecht, and which still call for policy development.
