Mycelium is a biobased alternative to PIR insulation

Definition. Mycelium is a biobased alternative to PIR insulation. Grown from fungal threads, mycelium has an insulation value comparable to PIR, is stronger than flax — making it suitable for flat roofs — and is less vulnerable to pests. In the study its CO₂ emissions were close to zero.

Its use is still small-scale and therefore relatively expensive, but the material has clear potential. New Economy’s circular insulation study for Amsterdam reports this.
