The built environment is the second climate sector of the province of Utrecht at 1.9 Mton CO₂-eq per year. Consumer energy use is the largest source at 1.12 Mton, followed by the energy use and processes of commerce, services and government.
Greenhouse gases arise here mainly from heating, cooling and lighting. The assessment therefore selected solutions that reduce the energy use of homes, from insulation to heat pumps.
