An open database can make the hidden material value in construction and demolition flows of the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area visible to municipalities and market parties. The urban mining study organises fifteen material flows across nine chain steps, from material input and stock to demolition, processing, recycling and untraceable losses.
This shared information base shows where valuable materials are downcycled and where separate collection, reuse or high-grade processing can be promising. The database is therefore not only an inventory, but also a basis for comparing circular business cases and regional interventions.
