Industrial estate residual flow scans
Industrial estates throughout the Netherlands are home to a significant loss of valuable raw materials. With 60% of Dutch raw material consumption, industrial estates play a key role in the transition to a future-proof and circular region. What can the province, environmental agencies, and municipalities do with this enormous pool of raw materials?
There is a need for insight, particularly into the value and opportunities for businesses to better utilize residual flows. Businesses play a vital role in the transition to a circular economy. By gaining insight into the value of residual flows, Circular.Biz Providing businesses with valuable information and encouraging them to take action, this approach simultaneously gives the province, environmental services, and municipalities greater control over the residual flows circulating on industrial estates and potential local business cases by closing loops. The Circulair.biz website was created to address the need to offer businesses a solution and leverage the ecological and economic potential of residual flows. Using a programmatic approach, New Economy, in collaboration with Stec Groep, maps the potential for more circular business practices on industrial estates. The insights into residual flows, the resulting circular opportunities, and the fact sheets are publicly presented through our proprietary Circulair.Biz platform.
Seizing opportunities on an industrial estate
After mapping the process, the province, municipalities, and environmental services are provided with targeted advice on an effective program aimed at reducing waste flows. This involves a specific investigation into which programs are already active and can be strengthened by providing supporting information. The approach outlined above provides insight into promising circular business cases (flow-opportunity combinations) at the scale of the business park and, where possible, at the sector or residual flow level, supplemented with substantiated estimates of the impact on the environment, transport flows, and payback period. Circular business cases can include solutions such as organizing CIRCO tracks, circular procurement, avoiding waste and residual flows, higher-quality reuse or recycling, bundling logistics processes, and central collection.
