The application of the GHG protocol

Within the CSRD Compliance

A sustainability strategy based on quantified data. Read all about the GHG protocol and the CSRD guidelines.

From SMEs to listed companies, you will soon be faced with the challenge of meeting the CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), the new EU directive for sustainability reporting. For the 'Environmental' aspect, the part of the CSRD framework that focuses on emissions, we use the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. By using the GHG Protocol, you'll discover areas for improvement within your organization. In this blog post, you'll learn more about the GHG Protocol and how it's a valuable tool that supports the measurement and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions for the CSRD.

Overview of the GHG protocol

What is the GHG protocol within the CSRD framework?

The GHG Protocol, also known as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, is a globally recognized framework developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSDThe protocol was introduced in the 1990s and serves as a standardized method for identifying, quantifying, and reporting greenhouse gas emissions from companies, government agencies, and other organizations. It uses a structured approach consisting of three scopes to categorize emissions:

Scope 1
Direct emissions: These include greenhouse gas emissions from sources owned or controlled by the organization. Examples include emissions from fossil fuel combustion in company vehicles and fuel use in production processes.

Scope 2
Indirect emissions from electricity consumption: These are greenhouse gas emissions generated by the generation of electricity consumed by the organization. These emissions are not produced directly within the organization's boundaries, but are related to the organization's energy consumption.

Scope 3
Other indirect emissions: This scope includes all other emissions resulting from the organization's activities, which are outside the company's direct control or boundaries. These include, among other things, emissions caused by supply chains, waste management, transportation, and the use of sold products.

Reporting Scope 3 emissions allows companies to map their entire value chain and identify its environmental impacts. By gaining insight into these indirect emissions, companies can take targeted measures to improve their sustainability performance. This may include selecting suppliers with a low environmental impact, reducing transport distances, or promoting the reuse and recycling of products.

Why is the GHG Protocol important for emission reduction?

It is GHG protocol plays an important role in tackling climate change by promoting transparency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the GHG Protocol is used for the CSRD. Here are some reasons why the protocol is so important:

Standardization
The GHG Protocol provides a standardized approach to measuring and reporting emissions, allowing organizations to calculate their emissions consistently. This allows for comparison across companies and sectors and the establishment of benchmarks for improvement.

Accountability and transparency
By implementing the GHG Protocol, organizations are encouraged to publicly report their emissions. This increases transparency and accountability for stakeholders such as customers, investors, and the public.

Targeted emission reduction
The GHG Protocol provides organizations with insight into their emission sources and helps them identify areas where emission reductions are possible. This data can be used to develop targeted strategies to reduce the organization's carbon footprint.

International recognition
The GHG Protocol is globally recognized as a leading framework for emissions management. Using this protocol enhances an organization's credibility in terms of sustainability and corporate social responsibility.

In short, the GHG Protocol has become an indispensable tool for companies and organizations that take their environmental impact seriously and strive for a more sustainable future. CSRD compliance It is important that by measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions, they can develop effective strategies to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.
