When people are forced to eat unhealthy food or skip meals, this has major consequences for their health and for society as a whole. Access to healthy and affordable food is far from a given in our city. At the same time, these initiatives support thousands of struggling families: that&#039;s solidarity in practice. The research findings show that these aren&#039;t temporary fixes, but sustainable networks that strengthen our city. Volunteers and residents work together to save food surpluses, cook healthy meals, and build social networks. The network reaches&nbsp;<strong>approximately 1,900 low-income households<\/strong>&nbsp;and is estimated to realize&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac15 million social value per year<\/strong>, while the annual direct resources are only&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac1.7 million<\/strong>&nbsp;amounts. Without the food initiatives, the costs of poverty, health problems and environmental damage would rise to approximately&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac45\u201355 million per year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key points from the CBA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The CBA convincingly demonstrates that food initiatives are a necessary part of our social infrastructure. <strong>At the same time, the food initiatives themselves are vulnerable<\/strong>. Some facts and figures:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Big impact with few resources.<\/strong>&nbsp;The 32 food initiatives in Amsterdam North reach&nbsp;<strong>1,900 low-income households<\/strong>&nbsp;and deliver&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac15 million social value per year<\/strong>&nbsp;with a budget of only&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac1.7 million<\/strong>. This means that every euro invested yields several euros in return.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>High benefit-cost ratios.<\/strong>&nbsp;For the various types of initiatives, the benefit-cost ratios range from approximately&nbsp;<strong>5 and 22<\/strong>; social restaurants even achieve a ratio of&nbsp;<strong>22,3<\/strong>. Even when volunteer hours are valued, the ratios are still far above the <strong>5<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Prevention is cheaper than cure.<\/strong>&nbsp;In a scenario without these initiatives, the social costs of poverty, health and environmental damage will rise to&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac45\u201355 million per year<\/strong>. When years of life lost (QALYs) are also taken into account, the damage can amount to&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac81\u2013162 million for all low-income households<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>National relevance.<\/strong>&nbsp;Poverty and food insecurity affect&nbsp;<strong>more than 500,000 households<\/strong>. An unhealthy diet causes&nbsp;<strong>12,900 deaths per year<\/strong>&nbsp;and leads to&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac6 billion in healthcare costs<\/strong>, while food waste affects society&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac4.5 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;costs. Experiences from Amsterdam-Noord demonstrate how effective local projects can be in mitigating these costs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are food initiatives so important?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Security of existence and health:<\/strong>&nbsp;Initiatives ensure&nbsp;<strong>access to healthy food<\/strong>&nbsp;and prevent people from having to use expensive healthcare and social safety nets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Personal development and social cohesion:<\/strong>&nbsp;Volunteers and participants gain new skills, strengthen their network, and find a place to be together. Recognition and structural anchoring:<\/strong>&nbsp;View food initiatives as a collective infrastructure and offer&nbsp;<strong>structural financing, housing and logistical support<\/strong>.<br>2. <strong>Coordinated investments:<\/strong>&nbsp;Combine interventions such as shared kitchen space, electric logistics, and a facility umbrella cooperative with scaling-up measures such as a city fund or mandatory donations.<br><strong>3. Direction and collaboration:<\/strong>&nbsp;Set a&nbsp;<strong>food coordinator and network coordinator<\/strong>&nbsp;to counter fragmentation and better reach the target group.<br><strong>4. Monitoring and participation:<\/strong>&nbsp;Use tools such as the&nbsp;<strong>Food Insecurity Experience Scale<\/strong>&nbsp;and actively involve residents to break down cultural and language barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>baseline situation<\/strong>&nbsp;The report looks not only at Amsterdam North but also at the national context. An unhealthy diet contributes&nbsp;<strong>8.1 % contributes to the total disease burden<\/strong>&nbsp;in the Netherlands and causes approximately&nbsp;<strong>12,900 deaths<\/strong>&nbsp;per year; the associated healthcare costs amount to&nbsp;<strong>approximately \u20ac6 billion<\/strong>. In addition, more than half a million adults suffer from depression, which causes employers to lose&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac1.8 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;to absenteeism, and depression care costs again&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac1.6 billion<\/strong>&nbsp;per year. Food insecurity increases stress and depression; a conservative estimate suggests&nbsp;<strong>\u20ac340 million<\/strong>&nbsp;to costs attributable to this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure According to CBS, the share of people with debts increased in all income groups between 2021 and 2023;&nbsp;<strong>People below the poverty line are three times more likely to be in debt<\/strong>&nbsp;and people just above the poverty line twice as often.
